The chronicles of Burrito's bizarre adventure into Japanese.

I am a burrito.

I am also studying a little ol’ language you may have heard a thing or two about called Japanese.

When I first began studying – rolling with my main man Heisig some time around August, 2008 – I was a little overwhelmed with the amount of resources and advice available to me. All I really wanted was a starting place, and a glimpse into the long and seemingly arduous road I had stretching out before me; mainly, I wanted to find some resources discussing the journey itself, written from the heart and based on one’s own experience. I wanted to see the human side of learning a language often considered to be one of the most difficult for a native English speaker, such as myself. But whereas gurus and endless amounts of information on study methods were plentiful (and bless ’em all), the more human element I was seeking seemed to be sparse.

So this is where I chronicle my journey, from the elated highs and the demoralized lows of my experiences, to the goal-setting and trial-and-error that ultimately carry me through the many and varied stages of learning. I can’t guarantee that every (or any) post of mine will be of help, but perhaps something can be learned or inspired from my successes and failures. Nevertheless, perhaps I can show that even a burrito can have success in learning Japanese given enough tenacity, time and will.

As of late June, 2011, I’ve been studying Japanese more or less full time for almost 3 years now. Time sure flies when you’re playing Japanese RPGs all day. On a JLPT scale, I’d place my current level somewhere around JLPT2 (old or new), at least when it comes to vocabulary, kanji and grammar – listening still falls a little short since my focus has been so heavily on reading comprehension, but a little time (and a ton of anime, movies and documentaries) will fix that.

I’m currently trying to break into the crazy world of translation, but more on that later!

You can find the hollow shell of my old blog over yonder, my last.fm page over here, and my Twitter over there.
